Imam al-Nawawi’s collection of 40 Hadiths is one of the most important collections of hadiths we have today. Imam al Nawawi actually compiled a total of 42 hadiths for this collection, not 40. He was one of the greatest scholars of Islam and lived from 631 A.H. to 676 A.H, passing away at the age of 45. Allah (swt) granted him blessing and success in his work so that he could make great contributions to Islam before passing away at a relatively young age.

The scholars of the past and the present have given importance to the study of history, as an enhancement to Islamic knowledge, for an understanding of people must be biased on the experiences of those people. The study of history does not teach us directly how to worship Allah, but it is a necessity to understand our present and a lesson for future. It is a stepping stone for students learning how to give Dawah, to stand up to the lies told about our past and to put our present in to historical perspective.

Islam and the Islamic world have played and continue to play a major role in world history. In the century following the death of the Prophet Muhammad in 632 C.E., Islam spread widely and Muslim rulers created an empire that extended from North Africa to South Asia. The empire was greater than that of Rome at its zenith. While the West passed through its Dark Ages, Islamic civilization flourished, making major contributions to mathematics (Arabic numerals, algebra, geometry), philosophy, medicine and other sciences, art, and architecture.
